By using state-of-the-art technology, training and instrumentation, the laboratory professionals at OU MEDICAL CENTER help prevent disease by detecting unknown problems and aiding the diagnosis and treatment of conditions with accurate, timely test results. Lab test results comprise nearly 70% of a patient record and are vital to diagnosis and treatment. Results of lab tests often identify disease in early stages, when possibilities of a cure are greatest and treatment is least costly.
The laboratory at OU MEDICAL CENTER encompasses many specialties. Were proud to be the testing facility for all organ transplant programs in Oklahoma City. We have the only comprehensive Virology service in the Oklahoma City metropolitan area, and we are also a regional autopsy service. The Anatomic Pathology section is the lab of choice for the Breast and Cervical Cancer screening program for the Oklahoma State Department of Health and is involved in research programs involving early cancer detection. Our transfusion service provides blood products for the Level I Trauma Center at OU MEDICAL CENTER, the only Level I facility in Oklahoma. In addition, our highly automated Core laboratory brings visitors from all over the country, interested in viewing its state-of-the-art equipment and instruments.
OU MEDICAL CENTER Laboratory includes clinical laboratories and anatomic pathology services in Presbyterian Tower, Everett Tower, The Childrens Hospital and the OU Physicians Building. These facilities occupy approximately 70,000 square feet. We have a technical and clerical staff of approximately 210 FTE. The Pathology Department of the OU Physicians provides the professional services for our laboratory. We perform approximately 140,000 laboratory tests per month.
Our analytical capability is supported by a laboratory computer system interfaced to instruments and integrated with the hospital information system with order entry inquiry and remote reporting of results.
OU MEDICAL CENTER Laboratories are accredited by the College of American Pathologists, Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, American Association of Blood Banks and the American Society of Histocompatibility and Immunology.Our pathologists are participants in several cooperative groups for clinical trials in oncology, including the Southwest Oncology Group, Gynecologic Oncology Group, Pediatric Oncology Group, the ALTS study and the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast Project. We are affiliated with several local and national specialty and reference laboratories.
OU MEDICAL CENTER Laboratory services are available to patients from physicians offices, clinics and the State Department of Health through our outreach services which include courier service for specimen pickup and delivery of reports. The physicians of OU Physicians also serve as consultation resources for difficult diagnostic problems and special procedures referred to us by other pathologists and clinicians.
OU MEDICAL CENTER Laboratory offers a variety of educational and research opportunities. The technologists are active participants in the resident training program as well as serving as clinical instructors to laboratory medicine students.
